Basic STARS Certificate for Washington
The Child Care Basics is now required, and is the only option to meet the Basic STARS training requirements for those that work in a licensed child care center or family child care effective July 1, 2014. The 20 Hour Basic STARS Training is no longer accepted for the Initial Training Requirement.
This course meets the basic STARS training requirements for those providing care to children in child care centers, family home providers, and trainers in Washington State.
The Child Care Basics course curriculum and learning outcomes were provided by DCYF to meet the new Child Care Basics training requirement (implemented by DCYF November 2018).

Currently we are unable to offer the Spanish option of the Child Care Basics.

This Child Care Basics 30-hour course serves as an introduction for professionals in meeting the licensing requirement. The intent of the law is to assure families that the licensed professionals caring for their children are knowledgeable of child development, resourceful in planning activities, skilled in guiding behavior, and able to maintain healthy environments.

Child care license applicants, center directors, assistant directors, program supervisors, lead teachers, assistant teachers, and aides must complete the child care basics training:
(a) Prior to being granted a license;
(b) Prior to working unsupervised with children; or
(c) Within three months of employment.
