Course Description
Child abuse remains a devastating reality, with serious consequences for children's safety and well-being. It is the leading cause of death among children ages four and younger, and tragically, more than three children in the U.S. lose their lives daily due to abuse within their own homes. This course examines the signs of child abuse, the responsibilities of those who must report suspected cases, and the broader impact of neglect and maltreatment. Under the Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), as amended by the Keeping Children and Families Safe Act of 2003, child abuse and neglect are legally defined as:
- Any recent act or failure to act by a parent or caregiver that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation.
- Any action or inaction that creates an imminent risk of serious harm.
