Course Description
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system. In the early 1900s, it was one of the leading causes of childhood mortality. The introduction of a vaccine in the 1920s dramatically changed the landscape of this disease, nearly eradicating it by the mid-20th century. By the 1980s, thanks to widespread immunization, fewer than 3,000 cases were reported annually in the United States. However, in recent decades, pertussis has made a troubling resurgence. In 2000, the World Health Organization documented over 17.6 million cases worldwide, and by 2004, the United States alone reported 25,827 cases. Outbreaks now occur more frequently, with cyclical epidemics every three to four years.
