Fostering Respect for Everyone

3/5/2019

Your program has just accepted a new child who has some special needs or exceptionalities. The other children in your care are not accustomed to interacting with a child who is different than they are.

How would you go about this introduction and ensuring that all children in your care are respected and valued?

I would probably introduce the new student in the same way I would any other student. Maybe that day our circle time stories could be based on diversity and differences.

Before the student becomes part of our class I would read a book that would include a similar child so that the children can see how the students in the book react and interact with the other student. I would have an open discussion about how we can be friends with others even is they are not like us and how it is important for us to show respect to everyone. When the child enters our class I would introduce them as our new friend.

I like your style! Talking with the class first about the new student and maybe what makes him different inviting the Child's parent or guardian to visit with the class before the child comes into the classroom for the first time is very helpful.

I would introduce the new student just like I would any student. I would ask each existing child their favorite part of the day and if there is anything we do each day they didn't enjoy when they first started doing it but like now and why.

I would get to know his or her interests before introducing her to the class. Usually. it's something as simple a favorite color, toy or TV show. When the new student meets the class, we talk about the new student's interests. Also, with all new students, no matter their ability, we ask for volunteers to assist the new student throughout the day.

I'm a transportation assistant at Epic ECEAP I have observe the teacher has posters on the wall or the shelve where children can see them. Posters of children with special needs. Our teacher talks to the children about the children and reads them books. We haven't got children at this time in our classroom at this moment.

I have actually been in a situation where a new student with cerebral palsy joined our two year old class. She was non verbal and in a wheel chair. Right away we had a circle time when she joined and we sang our welcome song to her and the rest of the kids. We then talked about cerebral palsy to the class and tried to educate them about her and her abilities. With the kiddos being so young, they would want to climb up or push her wheel chair and we would gently talk to the kids and explained how it wasn’t safe for her or the children to do that. And would show them better ways to interact with her with toys or books possibly. After a few weeks it was as if she was just like the other kiddos in there and the other kids carried on with her in the class as normal.
